If you are in the military, you have extra protections if you have trouble paying your bills.
• Your car can't be repossessed without a court order.
• If you are deployed abroad and a collection agency gets a judgment against you, the court must appoint an attorney for you.
• If you can't be in court to defend yourself against a collection attempt, you can get a stay of the final judgment.
• If there's a default judgment against you during your service, you can ask to reopen the case.
• After you enter the service, purchases of cars and other personal property can't be terminated during your service without a court order.
• Anyone holding a lien on your property cannot foreclose or enforce a lien without a court order during your service or for 90 days afterward.
• The maximum interest rate for debts is 6 percent during your military service; anything above that must be forgiven.
