Revenue (2006): $9.4 billion, down 3 percent from previous year

Spa visits (2006): 110 million, a decline of 16 percent from previous year

Active spa-goers: 32 million

In total: 1 in 4 Americans has been to a spa

Employees: 234, 600 (118,00 full-time; 73,600 part-time; 42,900 contract)

Top growth areas by spa type: Medical (19%), resort/hotel (16%), destination (13%)

Lights out at U energy conference. Irony police notified.

Just as Lawrence Kazmerski, a top official at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, was about to give the keynote address at the University of Minnesota's annual E3 conference at the RiverCentre in St. Paul, the lights went out, bathing the audience in darkness and a deep sense of irony.
