After much pushing from an activist investor, Minneapolis New York City Target Corp. sold almost half its credit card receivables for $3.6 billion. 5/6 GWS Inc. Boundless Network Boundless acquired longtime family-owned Minneapolis Austin, Texas GWS Inc., a promotional products company. 5/8 European and U.S. Best Buy Co. Inc. Best Buy will purchase a 50 percent interest retail business Richfield in Carphone Warehouse Group, a European mobile-phone retailer. 5/9 HighJump Software Battery Ventures 3M Co. sold its HighJump Software unit Eden Prairie Indiana to a technology venture-capital and private-equity firm. 5/9 Quest Technologies Inc. 3M Co. Quest Technologies, which makes Oconomowoc, Wis. Maplewood sound-monitoring equipment, will complement 3M's safety products.

Lights out at U energy conference. Irony police notified.

Just as Lawrence Kazmerski, a top official at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, was about to give the keynote address at the University of Minnesota's annual E3 conference at the RiverCentre in St. Paul, the lights went out, bathing the audience in darkness and a deep sense of irony.
