The Mayo Clinic and Allianz Life Insurance Co. of North America made Fortune magazine's annual list of the 100 best companies to work for, with Mayo at No. 41 and Allianz at No. 59.

Results of the survey-based ranking, officially out Thursday, were available Wednesday via Fortune's iPad app.

Both Minnesota companies were also on the Fortune list last year, with General Mills Inc.

This year, General Mills was absent. The company said it didn't participate.

Topping this list is Mountain View, Calif.-based Google Inc., which was No. 1 last year, too.

Allianz Life president and CEO Walter White said the company takes it takes workplace issues very seriously. "This is a nice way to see that recognized," White said.

White said he thinks the company's extra benefits, such as its onsite gym and child care facility, as well as its emphasis on career development, communication and engagement in the community, helped propel Allianz Life into the top ranks.

"It's just a nice atmosphere to see kids in the building," he said.

The study is done by Great Place to Work Institute, a company in San Francisco, independent from Fortune, that ultimately selects the winners.

To qualify, companies have to have at least 1,000 employees and have been in business for five years. They also have to agree to have their employees participate in the random survey Great Place to Work conducts, which forms two-thirds of the final score.

Great Place to Work sends both online and paper surveys with several dozen questions to a minimum of 400 employees at each company, and at least 200 have to respond for the survey to be valid. There is also a culture audit the company files focusing on other facets of the workplace, such as company policies.
