Target history: Hired as junior buyer of paints in 1979, right out of grad school; rose through merchandising ranks and became executive vice president of merchandising in 1994; promoted to president in 1999; joined board of directors in January 2007

Rise and shine: Before 5 a.m.

Smell the coffee: Make that a half-regular, half-decaf with raspberry syrup and room for milk.

Get the blood pumping: With a morning run. Also fun: biking and snowboarding

Makes time: Serving his second, three-year term on the board of directors at TreeHouse, a Christian-based nonprofit that provides safe places for kids and helps them learn to deal with life's stresses
