The Home Depot Inc. will close its store in Cottage Grove along with 14 other underperforming stores nationwide as the chain copes with a deepening slump in the housing market.
The Atlanta-based home-improvement chain also said Thursday that it's canceling plans for 50 new stores, joining retailers Wal-Mart and Kohl's in cutting back on growth in a stagnant economy. Home Depot still plans to open 55 stores this year.
The Cottage Grove store employs 108 people, Home Depot spokesman Stephen Holmes said. Some employees will be moved to other stores, but others could lose their jobs.
"We'll be making every effort possible to place them in this market," he said.
Nationwide, the closings will affect 1,300 employees, the company said.
Besides the Cottage Grove store, at 7210 E. Point Douglas Road, the closings include three in Wisconsin -- Beaver Dam, Fond du Lac and Milwaukee -- and one in Bismarck, N.D.
The Cottage Grove store, one of 34 in Minnesota, will be closed today to prepare for the liquidation of the store's inventory, Holmes said. It will reopen Saturday, and the clearance sale is expected to take seven or eight weeks.

The story argues there is little evidence that proves the benefits of advanced CT scans. Medicare, the story noted, doubted whether such procedures were necessary [...]

re: The Economy
Are you kidding me - is/are Lowes, Hardware Hank, Menards or any other major box lumber company closing this year? Nope, just HD in Cottage … read more Grove - try to understand people...this SINGLE store is underperforming by leaps and bounds beyond most/any other HD store in MN. Consider this...CG is one of the fastest growing metro cities...and projected to grow at a larger than average pace than most other Washington Cty cities over the next 15 years. Now ask yourself this, why would the HD choose to close this store knowing this - and having this type of data readily available? It's PURELY because Cottage Grove is a poorly developed city with no vision for the future - or if you believe they have a vision, then a vision, based on past examples, that isn't successful and will not be conducive to supporting big box retail. Get it? No? Well then go on thinking that the reason HD is closing all of ONE store in MN that the economy is the reason for this move - I'll give you the fact that the economy does suck right now...primarily due to a $60 fill up compared to $40 just 2 months ago - but HD closing in CG is not due to this whatsoever...they threatened to close the location just 1 year after it opened nearly 10 years ago now. CG begged them to remain open and that they had a plan that would boost commerce/retail - well that "plan" never came to fruition...same old same old CG planning/vision and development has led to MANY businesses going out of business over time. The city would be better off being ran by a council of monkeys if you ask me (at least they're occasionally funny and fun to watch!)
