Minnesota Power said Wednesday that 70 new wind power turbines have begun operating in south-central North Dakota to deliver power to the Iron Range.
The company said the second and third phases of its Bison Wind Energy Center near New Salem, N.D., are capable of producing 210 megawatts of power. A megawatt is 1 million watts.
With the new capacity, the company said it will get 20 percent of its power from renewable sources. A state mandate requires 25 percent from renewables by 2025.
The power is brought to Minnesota over a 465-mile transmission line that once delivered coal-generated electricity.
