Crude oil pipeline across Wisconsin restarts after spill cleanup, repair

Enbridge Energy has restarted a Wisconsin oil pipeline after cleaning up a spill and making repairs on a rupture that occurred on July 27.
In a statement, the company said it had received approval to restart the pipeline from the U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, which had ordered the line to remain closed last week.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in a statement that Enbridge will be required to submit a thorough safety plan for its entire Lakehead Pipeline System, which crosses Minnesota and Wisconsin, among other states.
"Going forward, I will be holding weekly meetings with my team to ensure Enbridge is complying with our safety requirements, " LaHood said.
The pipeline has a capacity of 317,600 barrels per day, and mostly carries light crude oil to Chicago-area refineries.
The spill near Grand Marsh, Wis., about 75 miles north of Madison, released about 1,200 barrels.
