Fridley-based Medtronic has won 510(k) clearance from the Food and Drug Administration for a key surgical cutting tool used in orthopaedic procedures, officials announced Monday.

The approval of Medtronic's new "BSC9.1S Bipolar Sealer with Cutting" device is expected to simultaneously make cuts, seal tissue and stop bleeding during surgery without the need for doctors to constantly change tools.

The product, which is designed to prevent blood loss and save time, falls under Medtronic's Advanced Energy business.
