Coagulife Pharmacy of Savage, founded in 2004 to address the treatment of hemophilia, has been acquired by competitor BioRx of Cincinnati. Terms were not disclosed.
Coagulife was started by brothers Jeff and Daniel Kallberg. The company not only provides clotting factor medications and supplies for treating hemophilia and related bleeding disorders, but also offers value-added services. They include assessment, a weight-loss program and physical therapy -- all with the goal of reducing hospitalizations, Daniel Kallberg said.
BioRx, which also was founded in 2004 to address the needs of people with hemophilia, said it would use the acquisition as a way to treat patients who suffer from chronic joint damage, which is common among hemophilia patients and can worsen internal bleeding.
About 1 in 15,000 people suffer from hemophilia, a bleeding disorder caused by low levels or the absence of a blood protein essential to clotting. Hemophilia delays coagulation, which makes bleeding difficult to control. Patient treatment can cost up to $300,000.
BioRx officials said Monday that they and Coagulife will develop new programs to help patients recover more quickly and efficiently at home.
"The addition of Coagulife talent and expertise will contribute significantly to our leadership in home hemophilia care," said Phil Rielly, president and co-founder of BioRx. "We are excited to grow together in delivering outstanding personalized care to the bleeding disorders community."
Jeff Kallberg lives with hemophilia and speaks nationally about the importance of physical activity for hemophilia patients. He is also a licensed physical therapist and a black belt in Tae Kwon Do.
"We've known Jeff for many years," said Rielly. "He is deeply respected in the hemophilia community and the physical therapy profession. He and Daniel have built a successful business that complements our capabilities very well. Combined, both companies will continue to thrive in a highly competitive business environment."
