Career: Joined Northwest in 1991 as deputy general counsel and was involved in the airline's 1993 restructuring. From 1994 to 1999, he was senior vice president and general counsel. Spent four years (2001 to 2004) as the company's president, which included overseeing labor relations. Named CEO in October 2004, succeeding Richard Anderson. Before joining Northwest, Steenland was senior partner at the Washington law firm of Verner, Liipfert, Bernhard, McPherson and Hand.

Bad markets= No IPOs
