Pete Van Helden will be succeeded by Kevin Holt
SuperValu Inc. said Thursday that Pete Van Helden, executive vice president of retail operations, will be leaving this spring, describing the departure as "a mutually beneficial decision."
Van Helden joined the Eden Prairie-based grocery wholesaler and retailer as part of its acquisition of Albertson's in 2006 and served in his present role with SuperValu since 2009. He began his career with Albertson's in 1978.
SuperValu spokesman Mike Siemienas said Thursday he didn't know of Van Helden's future plans. In a statement, CEO Craig Herkert said: "Pete ran stores, drove integration after corporate mergers and acquisitions, and set strategy for the retail divisions. We will miss his active voice in our company and wish him all the best as he takes on new challenges outside of SuperValu."
Van Helden will be succeeded by Kevin Holt, a former Meijer, Inc. executive. The company said Holt, 53, will join SuperValu in late May and will work closely with Van Helden to ensure a smooth transition.
Holt spent 13 years at Meijer, leaving in 2007 to join Sears Holding Co. where he worked for three years. He most recently served as president of Hudsonville Ice Cream and Kilwin's Quality Confections in Michigan.
