Mega Monday?

  • Updated: December 26, 2011 - 8:32 PM

Last year, about 190 million people hit the nation's malls on Dec. 26, spending about $5.7 billion, according to ShopperTrak. When numbers from this Monday -- the first day after Christmas that's fallen on a Monday in six years -- are compiled, retailers could see a boost over 2010's numbers. Some shopping tidbits:

• Store traffic on Dec. 26 was expected to be up 60 percent over last year. It was expected to be the third-busiest shopping day of the holiday season.

40 percent of those polled said they planned to go shopping for sales in the next few days; 46 percent said they are staying home.

One in five shoppers this week will be using gift cards.

36 percent will be shopping for themselves.
