Edina-based Alliant Techsystems has won a contract to operate the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant in Missouri for another four years, officials announced today.

The size of the contract has not been released, but Alliant generated $1.6 billion in revenue during the past four years making 5.56mm, 7.62mm, and 50-caliber ammunition for the Army. It is assumed the new contract will generate similar income. Alliant is a defense firm with $4.1 billion in annual revenue that specializes in missiles, NASA rocket boosters, small caliber ammunition and satellites and aircraft parts.

The company has operated the Army's Lake City facility since April 1, 2000, producing 6.8 billion rounds of ammunition during that time. Production has increased dramatically as a result of the war in Iraq -- from 350 million rounds per year to more than 1.4 billion.

Alliant, the largest producer of commercial and military ammunition in the nation, also makes ammunition for police stations and hunters around the country. It owns and operates the Federal Cartridge plant in Anoka.
