3M Corp. said Monday that it has introduced a new kind of exterior film that is applied to the outside of windows to reduce the risk of thermal stress, especially on windows with multiple glass panels.

The film is based on nanotechnology consisting of hundreds of ultra-thin layers, less than the thickness of one Post-it Note, the Maplewood-based company said.

The technology enables the film to provide heat control and glare reduction while preserving exterior and interior window views.

The technology is designed to block up to 99.9 percent of damaging UV rays, minimizing the sun's fading effect on upholstery, carpet and wallpaper.
