The facility, which should open in late summer, will supply farmers in Eastern Europe with irrigation equipment.

The Toro Co. announced Thursday it would build a new manufacturing plant in Romania beginning early this year. The 120,000 square foot plant, which will manufacture micro irrigation products for farmers in Eastern Europe, is expected to be operational by late summer.

"As demands for water increase, this expansion project represents an important strategic investment for Toro that creates a production and export hub for our products to support growth in Eastern Europe," Judy Altmaier, vice president of operations, said in a statement.

Bloomington-based Toro has irrigation manufacturing operations in Rome, Australia, Mexico, Florida and California.

In a generally down day on Wall Street, Toro shares rose more than 2 percent in midday trading to more than $62. The stock has tripled in the past two years and is flirting with record highs.

The manufacturer of landscape maintenance equipment, and precision irrigation systems will release earnings next week.
