Who is affected? Patients with implantable cardioverter defibrillators and cardiac resynchronization therapy-defibrillators who have Sprint Fidelis leads, models 6930, 6931, 6948, 6949. About 235,000 of the leads are implanted in patients worldwide.

How do I know what lead I have in my chest? The company may have issued a card for your wallet with the model number. Or, you can call your doctor. Or, you may receive a letter from Medtronic.

What should I do if I have a Sprint Fidelis lead? Call your doctor. Your defibrillator probably will be reprogrammed to detect potential problems with the lead.

Are there other symptoms of a malfunctioning lead? You may experience a beeping sound or inappropriate shocks from your defibrillator.

What if I have a pacemaker? Pacemaker patients are not affected.

Lights out at U energy conference. Irony police notified.

Just as Lawrence Kazmerski, a top official at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, was about to give the keynote address at the University of Minnesota's annual E3 conference at the RiverCentre in St. Paul, the lights went out, bathing the audience in darkness and a deep sense of irony.
