MRI machines are making their way into operating rooms, helping to guide surgery much the way GPS devices guide drivers. Here are some investments by Twin Cities hospitals:
United Hospital, St. Paul. Cost $6 million for equipment, $3.4 million for construction, to be introduced this month.
Abbott Northwestern Hospital, Minneapolis. Cost $6 million for equipment, $3 million for construction, introduced in June.
Regions Hospital, St. Paul. Cost $1.8 million for equipment and installation, introduced in spring 2006.
Hennepin County Medical Center, Minneapolis. Cost $1.6 million for equipment, $100,000 for construction, introduced in 2004.
University of Minnesota Medical Center-Fairview, Minneapolis. Cost about $3 million for equipment and construction, introduced in 1996. Now developing a version at $8 million to $10 million that may be introduced in 2008.

Just as Lawrence Kazmerski, a top official at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, was about to give the keynote address at the University of Minnesota's annual E3 conference at the RiverCentre in St. Paul, the lights went out, bathing the audience in darkness and a deep sense of irony.
