BEA again spurns takeover bid from Oracle
Business software maker BEA Systems Inc. signaled its intent to let Oracle Corporation's $6.7 billion takeover bid expire on Sunday, setting the stage for a showdown with its largest shareholder, billionaire investor Carl Icahn. After BEA's latest dismissal of Oracle's bid Friday, Icahn accused the company's board of trying to derail a possible sale and threatened to lead a shareholder rebellion unless the directors of BEA changed their ways. BEA says it's willing to sell for $21 per share, or about $8.2 billion -- a price that Oracle deemed "impossibly high."
New version of Mac operating system on sale
Apple's delayed update to its Mac OS X operating system went on sale Friday as Apple hopes to capitalize on rising sales of Macintosh computers to complement consumers' iPods and iPhones. Dubbed "Leopard" and technically called Mac OS X version 10.5, the upgrade offers improvements to an operating system that already was widely praised for its ease of use and slick interface. Leopard was originally due in June, but Apple said it needed to divert resources to accomplish the summer launch of the much-anticipated iPhone and would delay Leopard to do that.
FCC signs off on private buyout of Alltel
The Federal Communications Commission approved a $24.7 billion buyout of Alltel Corp., the nation's fifth-largest wireless carrier, to a private investment group. The agency approved the transfer of licenses held by Alltel to Atlantis Holdings, a holding company consisting of TPG Capital, formerly Texas Pacific Group, and GS Capital Partners, a subsidiary of Goldman Sachs. Alltel shareholders will receive $71.50 per share in cash, according to the terms of the deal. The company said Friday night that it expects the transaction to close by Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 22.
