Consumer Tips

Last update: August 13, 2007 - 11:07 PM

With all the recall news, what's a wary consumer to do? Some tips:

• Stay on top of recall information at www.recalls.gov, where you also can sign up for e-mail notification.

• Avoid buying children's goods at dollar stores and other deep- discounters because it's less likely that items have been pretested.

• Established retailers not only are more likely to have performed safety tests overseas, but they also have computerized inventory systems that can block cash registers from ringing up sales of recalled items that may not have been removed from the store.
