The Star Tribune Friday named Jim Bernard as its new senior vice president for digital, effective Monday.

Bernard, 42, was most recently general manager of MarketWatch.com, a national financial website that is a division of the Dow Jones Digital Network. That network also includes the Wall Street Journal and Barron's websites.

Bernard, who lives in Minnetonka with his wife and two children, was vice president of sales at CBS MarketWatch when it was acquired by Dow Jones in 2004. During his tenure, site traffic increased 35 percent and search traffic doubled.

"Jim is a top digital executive who has worked on a sophisticated national platform and is well-equipped to move the Star Tribune's ambitious multi-platform digital strategy forward," said Star Tribune Publisher and CEO Mike Klingensmith. "He has an extensive and versatile digital background that includes experience in sales, marketing, editorial, product development and strategic planning."

Bernard, a Twin Cities resident throughout his professional career, said the Star Tribune offers "the most comprehensive content in the region" and contains "a terrific base for growth."

Bernard has an MBA from the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota and a BA in English from the University of Iowa.
