I wrote about Gophers quarterback recruit Chris Streveler for today’s paper. Here are a few bonus items:
Wisconsin recruited Streveler, too.
“I committed [to Minnesota] on a Friday night, and I was supposed to go to a camp [at Wisconsin] on that Monday, but they didn’t seem very serious about it," Streveler said. "And I guess once I committed, they made a push to try to get me up there, through my coach. I told my coach, ‘Once I commit, I’m going to stay solid. I’m going to think it through, and I’m going to make one decision. I couldn’t be happier with the decision I made.”
Streveler's willing to play another position besides QB:
“They’re bringing me in as a quarterback," he said. "But the way they kind of say it is, ‘If I get hurt or break my arm and can’t play quarterback anymore -- the thing I told them is if I can get on the field earlier at a different position, whatever they need because I’m not a quarterback, I’m just a football player. ... But they’re bringing me in as a quarterback first and foremost.”
Here's more on Streveler from Josh Helmholdt, Midwest recruiting expert for Rivals.com:
“He’s a guy who really turns it on when the lights are on. He’s more of a Friday guy than a camp and a combine guy. He definitely has some work to do on his throwing mechanics, to be able to make the passes he needs against the caliber of Big Ten defenses he’s going to see. But he’s a gamer. I mean he’s a kid that has ability to will things to happen on the field and that’s always important from the quarterback position.”
