Dangerous floor mats in a Toyota -- mine

First off, some links, in case you missed last week's column (which turned into a photo gallery) on how drivers would like to modify freeway signs, and this week's column, which is about LED no-turn signs and license plates.

We now turn to Roadguy's personal vehicle and the fact that he felt as though his right foot was losing its, well, footing during yesterday's snow event. Man, I never wear these shoes, and they're weird for driving, I thought. Then I pulled out the floor mat and discoverd the real reason my heel was sliding around:

A mound of ice, adhered to the carpet, surrounded uselessly by sand I'd tracked in.

With my short commute, my car never fully heats up, at least not enough to melt away the mini-glacier that had built up over a couple of days. In fact, the freeze-thaw situation probably enhanced the slickness. The floor mat was sentenced to spend the night in a laundry tub and, while the thing was still pretty grubby this morning, my gas-pedal traction was greatly improved. As in Toyota's global crisis, I can't actually blame the floor mat, either.

The two cars visible in this photo were unoccupied:

I was sitting at a red light, so I had plenty of time to take the picture of the signs being violated. It was my second cycle through the light because the cars in the photo (and a truck behind them) were blocking one of the two lanes, and we law-abiding folks paid the price as we tried to get through single-file. Thanks fer puttin' yer convenience ahead of everyone else's, guys.

As long as we're looking at stoplight photos, here's another:

I know we've been over this before, but really, if you ever need a getaway car and don't want anyone to be able to see your plates from even a dozen feet away, a bike rack might be the way to go. But act soon, before the wizards of technology give us wireless electro-magic car identifiers that make pieces of alulminum obsolete

Speaking of snow piles...

Today's winter wonderland transportation photo is from alert reader Lea Anne:

Lea Anne was wondering whether she "should've stopped and looked for a pedestrian." Indeed -- there could be any number of  missing persons behind or under that snowbank, intrepid but hapless individuals who never made it to the crosswalk. And if anyone does try to cross, well, good luck to the driver who tries to stop.

Of course, if you're having trouble getting around on the streets or sidewalks, you could always fly to Lake Calhoun.

Don't like that no-parking sign? Just turn it around

Roadguy paid a visit to National Camera Exchange in downtown Minneapolis earlier today and left his car outside for a bit. For obvious reasons, I didn't pay much attention to this sign:

Then an employee inside filled me in. Apparently, when the Orpheum Theatre was redeveloped, the city took all of the camera store's parking, including where I'd put my car. She said that drivers sometimes turned the sign around...

... as if the tow truck driver would just say "My stars, aren't you clever -- of course you can park here." I didn't get towed during the few minutes I was there, but you might want to add "backward signs" to your list of things to look for when you're deciding where to park.

A pound of road salt every 10 feet?

I realized this afternoon, while out on the snow-plagued roads, that I never linked to this story about efforts to use less road salt. A key strategy is to spray brine and other solutions instead of pouring rock salt on the pavement, which, as you can see above, still happens. (Many trucks lack the tanks to carry liquids.)

As long as I'm linking, here's this week's Roadguy column from the other day. Good luck on the drive home.

In case you couldn't see that snow pile on your own...

Took this around 1:30 today at Hennepin and 9th. A sign of buried treasure? Low-cost public art? I have a call in to the city to find out what the deal is. Feel free to offer knowledge or theories below.
