Backcountry Hike and Fly Fishing

I had the pleasure of leading seven Winona State University students on a backcountry hike and fly fishing adventure on the upper South Fork Root River in Fillmore County, Minn. The recent snowfall made snowshoeing our mode of transportation as we embarked on a three mile hike through the road less section of river from Million Dollar Bridge to Deer Road Bridge. Each student bore a fly rod and basic instructions on how to catch trout.

Minnesota's winter trout catch-and-release opener

Personally, in the cold winter months I typically don't pound the water to catch heaps of fish. With the fatigue of the elements playing into the factor I prefer to be close to my car and to angle creeks where putting fish in my hand is easy.

Winter Stream Trout angling, middle January

The drive took nearly an hour and a half to get to the creek deep in a valley in the southeastern most county in the state. Stream was rising from the crystal clear flows and the trees lining the banks were covered in hoard frost. To me, the landscape was inviting, I understand that many would consider it daunting. The temperature on the dash thermometer read -4 degrees.

2011 Stream Trout Winter Opener

By 3pm the sun had begun to slip behind the bluff to the west. The air temperature plummeted several degrees over several minutes. We each brought at least a half a dozen fish to hand. We released many fish without handling. By gently handling the trout in this creek we can expect to catch them numerous more times over the next few months.

Browns and Rainbows

Further, we fish down stream further from our original spot. Our methods of catching salmonids have graduated to a fine activity that requires crawling on your hands and knees, hiding in the weeds, and sight fishing to the largest fish in the pool with a size 20. This is the antithesis of bobber fishing with a half-night crawler.

If you have ever fished and caught Bowfin before then you will understand that their mouths are very tough. I lost many fish as with this combined with the fact that I was using a three weight on fish consistently over six pounds.
