This is Amelia Rayno's third season on the Gophers men's basketball beat. She learned college basketball in North Carolina (Go Tar Heels!), where fanhood is not an option. In 2010, she joined the Star Tribune after graduating from Boston's Emerson College, which sadly had no exciting D-I college hoops to latch onto. Amelia has also worked on the sports desk at the Boston Globe and interned at the Detroit News.

According to the New York Post, Georgia Tech coach Paul Hewitt was prepared to accept the St. John's job Friday morning, assuming he could convince his wife to make the move to the Big Apple.

But Hewitt told school officials Thursday that he's decided to stay at Georgia Tech, according to

Before Hewitt decided to remain with the Yellow Jackets, however, Tubby Smith was mentioned as his possible replacement.

A person familiar with the situation said people connected to Georgia Tech contacted Smith on the school's behalf, hoping to gauge his interest in the job, just in case Hewitt took the St. John's gig.

"Others are calling for [Georgia Tech]," the person said.

But the Yellow Jackets are not alone. The person familiar with the situation said Oregon officials have contacted Smith directly about that opening.

He said Nike chairman Phil Knight, a huge booster for the school, wants Smith to take the gig.

"Phil Knight wants Tubby at Oregon," the person said.

Both schools offer the kind of facilities Smith has sought since his arrival in 2007.

It's hard to envision a scenario that would produce a Gophers practice facility within the next two years.

Stay tuned.
