Michael Rand started RandBall with hopes that he could convince the world to love jumpsuits as much as he does. So far, he's only succeeded in using the word "redacted" a lot. He welcomes suggestions, news tips, links of pure genius, and pictures of pets in Halloween costumes here, though he already knows he will regret that last part.

TFD: Local pro soccer team signs one guy named Two Boys

Posted by: Michael Rand under Soccer Updated: March 23, 2010 - 4:59 PM

Super Rookie brings this to our attention: the NSC Minnesota Stars, the new professional soccer team in the Twin Cities, announced the signing of four players on Monday. Local soccer fans might notice a familiar name or two in the mix. But one name that jumps out is this one:

Two Boys Gumede. [Note: His name is hyphenated most places we find it as Two-Boys, but the release does not have it hyphenated].

Best name in sports? Could be. And it sounds like he can play. Here's a little more on him, from the release:

A 24-year-old midfielder and forward from Durban, South Africa, [Gumede] will make his professional debut for the Stars this season after signing a contract, pending league approval. Gumede arrived in the United States as an exchange student in 2001. He attended the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he made 75 appearances, starting 73 times. Gumede tallied 11 goals and 18 assists in four seasons at UAB. He was highly regarded during those four seasons, making the Conference USA All-Freshman team in 2005, second-team All-CUSA in 2006 and first-team All-CUSA in 2008 and 2009. He was on the watch list for the 2009 MAC Hermann Trophy, awarded after every season to college soccer’s most outstanding player. Gumede redshirted in 2007 after visa trouble kept him from returning to the United States after a visit to South Africa.
