Michael Rand started RandBall with hopes that he could convince the world to love jumpsuits as much as he does. So far, he's only succeeded in using the word "redacted" a lot. He welcomes suggestions, news tips, links of pure genius, and pictures of pets in Halloween costumes here, though he already knows he will regret that last part.

TFD: Stu's Hunt Down -- Mark Lemke

Posted by: Michael Rand under Professional baseball Updated: February 4, 2010 - 5:03 PM

Stu is here to save the day with the final post: a Hunt Down on Mark Lemke, who would have been the MVP of the 1991 World Series if Lonnie Smith could run the bases or if someone hadn't cheated near first base. Stu, take it away:

-------------------

The Huntdown

Name: Mark Lemke

Nickname: Wiki says it’s “The Lemmer.” That is an awful nickname.

Claim to Fame, Minnesota: the Nick Punto of his day, a slick-fielding second baseman composed entirely of hustle, moxie, grit AND pluck, Lemke single-handedly carried the Atlanta Braves to the brink of a World Series title in 1991. Not known for his bat, he hit .417 with three triples in the series, knocked in the game-winning run in the 12th inning of Game 3, and I swear he was on base every inning of Games 3, 4, and 5.

Claim to Fame, Everywhere Else: Lemke spent all but one major league season with the Braves, and was a member of the 1995 World Champions (sorry, Matt). In a fact I just created, Bobby Cox would often pull Lemke and Jeff Blauser in a red Radio Flyer wagon from the clubhouse to the dugout and back again whenever they got squirrelly.

Where He Is Now: like a poor man’s Karl Tackleberry, Lemke co-hosts the Braves Radio Network’s pre-game show with broadcasting legend Chip Caray.

Glorious Randomness: Lemke’s second cousin twice removed is the late William Lemke, who was born in Albany, MN (ONE OF US!) and ran for President in 1936 on the Union Party ticket. If any RandBallers happen to be on staff at UND, you can check out his papers (size: 56.25 linear feet) at the university library.
