Why do the Gophers always allow average nonconference opponents to hang around and gain confidence?

That's what happened early in Minnesota's season-opener against Tennessee Tech. The Gophers turned the ball over and didn't choose their shots well.

But they loosened up about midway through the first half on a Rodney Williams' dunk. The freshman blocked Frank Davis' layup attempt into the third row a few plays later. Williams has seven points so far.

I think his excitement really got everything moving for the Gophers, who lead 37-22.

Ralph Sampson III found success with a smooth turnaround jumper near the free throw line. He has six points and six boards.

Lawrence Westbrook leads the team with nine points. He hit a crazy three-pointer at the buzzer that was partially blocked.

I like Tennessee Tech's Kevin Murphy. He's really doing everything to try to keep the Golden Eagles in this one. He has nine points and four rebounds.

I'm most impressed with Williams. He's hit a three-pointer. He's dunked a few times. He has a block.

His athleticism is a special brand.

On another note, I don't see Royce White anywhere. I don't know what that means. I'm sure Tubby Smith will tell us all after the game.
