Dumb luck

I am the luckiest man on the face of the Earth.

Why?

Because I forgot my wedding anniversary on Saturday -- and my way-better half did, too.

Between our trip to France and frenetic work and home paces since we returned, the "big day" just slipped out of our brains. We're not one of those couples where one partner silently hopes that the other remembers the occasion; if either of us had thought about it at any point during the past six weeks, we would have discussed what we wanted to do to mark the occasion.

But it was completely out of our consciousness until talking with friends last night at Black Sheep Pizza.

The good news is that on our anniversary, we did what we usually do: have a great home-cooked meal (perfectly cooked dry-aged New York strip and a big ol' sweet potato) and a swell bottle of wine.

I had sampled the 2006 Buena Vista Carneros Pinot Noir earlier in the day as part of my master-of-ceremonies duties at an event called "The Affair." I had liked it enough to have said "but of course" when the distributor asked if I wanted a bottle to take home.

It was lovely with the steak, with seriously beautiful fruit (darker cherry than expected) and more earthy, mushroom elements than most domestic pinots proffer. It's a drink-now kind of wine, and a great value at $22-$25, comparable to juice that costs twice that much.

I would say that it salvaged our anniversary if I had actually know it at the time.
