State Sen. Tom Bakk yesterday asked the governor to call lawmakers back to St. Paul this year so they can get cracking on passing a borrowing bill for capital projects.
"I see no reason that we sit around and wait, with an economy that is badly failing," said Bakk, a Cook DFLer who wants Pawlenty's job when he retires next year.
Pawlenty said he'd think about it and today he concluded an early start on borrowing "would not make a real difference," he told Bakk in a letter. Here's Pawlenty's letter.
Pawlenty's letter also seemed to reject Bakk's idea that he personally come before the Senate Taxes committee, which Bakk chairs, on Dec. 7 to explain his proposed spending cap constitutional amendment.
But the governor did say that "Commissioner Tom Hanson and others will look forward to outlining the proposal in detail and receiving input from the committee" at the December hearing.
Bakk said, "there needs to be a very serious discussion about how (the proposed amendment) would impact the state's future and the proposal should be scrutinized before being placed on the ballot."
