Thanksgiving is a cheap holiday. Supermarkets fall all over themselves to offer low prices on traditional turkey and fixings. Case in point? Wal-Mart's Wednesday ad featuring a frozen whole turkey for 40 cents a pound (limit two, various brands), Green Giant canned vegetables for 50 cents, Ocean Spray cranberry sauce for 88 cents, five pounds of red potatoes for $2, Heinz gravy (12 oz.) for 75 cents, and Stove Top stuffing (6 oz.) for 78 cents. It's a dinner for a family of eight for less than $20, says Wal-Mart.
The hitch is finding the turkeys in stock. A reader said the Red WIng store is sold out. I called the meat department in Shakopee and was told that all Twin Cities' stores are sold out and may not get more in before the promotion is set to end on Tuesday, Nov. 10.
I checked with the PR department at Wal-Mart for an update on availability and am still waiting to see if they expect more birds to fly in. Stay tuned.
Meanwhile if you still have the ad which was in the A section in Wednesday's Star Tribune, you can take it to Target to have them price match all of the items except the potatoes and the turkey. Target won't price-match items unless a brand name is specified.
