Video games continue their recent downward spiral, with software sales off 6 percent in the world's three largest markets during the third quarter, according to a new report from Top Global Markets. Worst hit was the United Kingdom, where total unit game sales were down 19 percent -- scuttled by portable software sales, which were down a whopping 34 percent. In the United States, total unit sales were down 9 percent in the third quarter. Things were better in Japan, where total unit sales were up 15 percent. That was largely the result of the release of Dragon Quest IX, which was the world's biggest-selling title during the third quarter with 3.9 million copies -- even though it was available just in Japan. Still, Japan's software sales were down 9 percent year to date, with the United States off 9 percent and the UK off 13 percent for the year so far.
