WASHINGTON -- Parking garages usually aren't the most attractive buildings in a city, but they are the subject of a new exhibit at the National Building Museum in Washington.
The exhibit, "House of Cars: Innovation and the Parking Garage," is on view until July 2010. It is the first major exhibit to explore the history of the familiar structures.
Curators say parking garages are more than just concrete decks. They have been showcases for innovation and at times served as platforms for the best-known architects of the 20th century. The exhibit features the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, among others, and includes art as well as footage from TV and movies.
I don't know that I'll be hopping the next flight to Reagan National Airport to see the exhibit, but I would hope that Minneapolis at least gets a mention, as we're the home of quite a few parking garages that make an attempt to go beyond utilitarian. Among the more recent spruce-ups: The drab Gateway ramp now has a touch of brick, to try to better fit in with buildings like the Depot across the street, while the ramp attached to the Hyatt, pictured above, is newly colorized. (I think I like it better than the plain white, though it reminds me of an elementary school art project that involved squares of tissue paper, some glue, and a salad dressing bottle.)
If you've got a favorite (or least favorite) Twin Cities parking ramp, as we call them around here, add your thoughts to the comments below.
