YOUR GUIDE TO THE TWIN CITIES
By Rachel E. Stassen-Berger
State Sen. Tarryl Clark, DFL-St. Cloud, has gotten the public nod from some hefty unions as she runs for the DFL endorsement to face Republican U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann in 2010 and some quieter cash endorsements from current members of Congress.
According to her campaign finance report, filed yesterday, U.S. Reps. Collin Peterson and Jim Oberstar both contributed $2,000 and Rep. Keith Ellison contributed $1,000.
None of the three Democratic members of Congress have officially endorsed Clark over doctor Maureen Reed, who is also running for the DFL nod in the 6th District, but their cash may speak all by itself.
Reed's finance report doesn't show contributions from any of the three or any other sitting member of Congress but she still has a finance edge on Clark.
From our piece today:
Clark, who entered the race in July, raised $308,000 over the past nine weeks, according to reports filed Thursday with the Federal Election Commission. Her campaign has $270,000 in cash on hand.
Reed raised $135,000 in the third quarter, but because she started earlier she has $311,000 on hand.
While such sums are significant a year before the election, they are just a start. Elwyn Tinklenberg, the moderate DFL candidate in 2008, raised $2.9 million, while Bachmann raised $3.5 million.
For the 2010 election, Bachmann raised $345,000 in the third quarter and has $617,000 cash on hand.
Reed will officially kick-off her campaign and open her Anoka campaign headquarters on Saturday.
