Thirty years ago at a trattoria on the isle of Capri, Bill Ward had a lusty homemade red that rocked his world. Ever since this "so that's what wine's all about" moment, he has been seeking similar experiences, always aiming to approach wine with an innocent eye. He's been writing about travel, food and wine for more than a decade and won a James Beard Award in 2004 for a series on Italian regional cuisine. His column, Liquid Assets, runs every Thursday in Taste.

Looks like the Lex is the place to be for wine events during the next month or so. A few upcoming highlights on the local scene:
*First up at the Lexington restaurant, 1096 Grand Av. in St. Paul, is a Big Top Wine Club tasting tomorrow (Wednesday). The theme for the 7 p.m. event is holiday pairings. The club also will hold a "Big, Bad Reds" event Dec. 8 at the Lex. Joining the club is easy, and tickets to the events are just $20; call Nancy at 651-644-4501.
*1st Grand has its annual holiday show at the Lex from 6-9 p.m. on Nov. 13. This event always includes an array of interesting wines courtesy of the redoubtable Nick Nadeau. Tickets are $35; email info@1stGrandAveLiquors.com or call 651-227-7039.
*The next night, Nov. 14, the action moves south as the Wine Market sponsors "Wild About Wine" at the Minnesota Zoo. More than 75 wines will be poured at the 5:30-8:30 p.m. event. Tickets are $50 in advance, $55 at the door; for more information, including the wine list, go here.
*Haskell's Bacchus Society always offers up swell tastings, perhaps none better than its annual Appreciation Tasting. This year's event is set for 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Nov. 18 at level 9 of the Guthrie Theatre. Tickets are $45 for members, $50 for nonmembers; call 612-342-2437, ext. 921.
