Name: Theron Joseph Rubley
Nickname: T.J.
Claim to Fame, Minnesota: Rubley was the 3rd-string quarterback for the Green Bay Packers in 1995, behind future Vikings legend Brett Favre and some random Detmer. Or maybe it was a Hasselbeck. No matter. The point being: in that year’s game at the Metrodome, both Favre and Detmer/Hasselbeck went down with injuries during the game, leaving Rubley as Green Bay’s only healthy QB. With the score tied at 24-24 late in the 4th, Rubley had the Packers driving into Vikings territory. On 3rd-and-inches, Mike Holmgren called for a quarterback sneak. Rubley, knowing more about the NFL than Mike Holmgren, audibled out of it, rolled out to pass and…threw an interception to Jeff Brady. (Note: Brady still blew an assignment and missed two tackles on the play. ‘90S VIKINGS ZING!) The Vikings would go on to win 27-24 on a Fuad Reveiz field goal. Rubley would go on to being cut the next week and never playing in the NFL again. The Daily Norseman has a wonderful recap of the game here.
Claim to Fame, Everywhere Else: played college ball for Tulsa, was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams, and worked with Keanu Reeves in the truly terrible football movie The Replacements. At least Necessary Roughness had Kathy Ireland and the uproarious comedy of Sinbad.
