Peak time is now for berry picking

Raspberries and blueberries are at peak time for picking across southern and central Minnesota this week, and strawberry season is coming on strong in northern counties, according to state agriculture officials.

The 2014 growing season was delayed slightly because of cool, wet weather, but it doesn't seem to have compromised the quality of the berries.

Grower Gabe Knapton of Knapton's Rasperries, Pumpkins and Orchard in Greenfield in western Hennepin County said his raspberries may be the best-looking crop in the past three years.

The 2014 Minnesota Grown directory lists 50 summer raspberry producers and 31 blueberry farms that offer pick-your-own or pre-picked berries.  Minnesota Grown spokeswoman Jessica Miles suggests calling ahead before visiting farms to ensure that berries are available and picking conditions are favorable.
