Shafer Contracting Co. was selected by the Minnesota Department of Transportation as the team that would lead the design and building of the interchange on Highway 52 and an Oronoco frontage road near Pine Island's Elk Run project.
Shafer, which competed against four other firms, bid $34.3 million and must complete the overall project by Nov. 15, 2012, said MnDOT project manager Terry Ward on Thursday.
The selection came after Elk Run's developer Tower Investments on Wednesday donated 290 acres to the city and county for the interchange project to MnDOT.
Tower plans to build a bio business park, housing, a wellness community, along with other commercial space on the 2,325-acre Elk Run property.
Tower said on Wednesday the groundbreaking of the first building will take place at the earliest in October, a month later than officials had last predicted.
