A small portion of Nicollet Mall will be reopening to traffic Thursday afternoon, one day after a water gushed along the downtown Minneapolis street following a plumbing problem at a nearby building where construction work was underway.

Nicollet between 10th and 11th Streets will reopen at 2 p.m., city officials announced.

The closure forced municipal buses to detour around the block. Water service and damage was limited to the one building, said city spokesman Matt Lindstrom.

"This was an internal plumbing issue in the fire line at the development" at 87 S. 10th St., Lindstrom said. "The contractors working in the building didn't secure the fire line adequately in the building before requesting that the water to the building be turned back on."
