Magellan GPS unit gets the nod
Q I have a 2003 Acura with the factory navigation system. Sometimes it gets me lost due to the old map info, and upgrades are expensive. Is there any way to use another product in this system?

'HDMI handshake' can cause issues
Q I am experiencing a frustrating situation with my audio-video system. I have an Onkyo TX-SR606 receiver, a Sony Blu-ray player and a Sony Bravia HDTV. While watching HDTV from my cable box, I occasionally lose the audio-video signal for four to five seconds. There is no issue on non-HD signals, and some stations seem to be more affected than others. Blu-ray is not affected.

Plasma TVs are alive and well
Q I've read online that the Pioneer KURO plasma televisions are among the best, with amazing accuracy and definition. Apparently, Pioneer won't be making them after 2009, and videophiles are saying to scoop one up before they're gone. Are they really that good? Is their exit a statement on the future of plasma TV?

Lossless audio boosts Blu-ray
Q You've explained the benefits of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio on Blu-ray soundtracks. Do Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio improve the sound of standard music CDs? Since there seems to be big improvement in sound using Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, I would hope to see concert videos become available in Blu-ray format.

Sound Advice: VCRs can still record cable TV
Q We read your recent column about attaching a digital conversion box and a VCR to your television. Were you talking about the generic box that people must now attach if they have used an antenna for their TV reception, or was it a box like we have been given from our cable company? No matter what we do, we cannot figure out how to record TV shows anymore. We record a lot of TV programs, and now it appears we will be forced to pay more each month for the cable company's DVR so that we can record anything. Is it true that the digital switch was designed to kill the VCR?
