Q What should one consider when upholstered furniture needs cleaning? Our 10-year-old sofa and chairs are not worn, but look a bit soiled in bright light. We've vacuumed it occasionally. Is cleaning something easily done by me? If so, what type of cleaners do I use? Or is it better to hire someone?

Q I recently have seen a number of ads in magazines and on TV about mascara wands that vibrate as they apply the goo. It occurred to me that they must have batteries and may be a disposal issue. Is that true?

Fixit: After-the-fact soundproofing can cut noise from neighbors
Q The builder of our townhouse saved himself some money by not soundproofing the common walls in our units. While most of us have adjusted our habits so as not to annoy our next-door neighbors, it would be nice not to have to worry about the problem. What are some ways to soundproof our walls?
