Slide show: Reclaiming their ancestors' honor In the cold brace of the past December, Sheldon Wolfchild led
50 riders on a journey to honor 38 Mdewakanton Sioux who were hanged December 26, 1862. Since 2002, Wolfchild has led riders on this journey, retracing the defeated Sioux's march after the Dakota Conflict. That march 145 years ago went from the Lower Sioux Agency at Morton to Mankato. In the aftermath, two thousand famished women, children and elderly wintered near Ft. Snelling. In the spring they were shipped down the river to the Missouri, finally landing in South Dakota. In Mankato, 323 Sioux men were held. President Lincoln pardoned all but 38. Those 38 were hanged together. Apr 20, 2007
