James Eli Shiffer writes the Star Tribune’s Whistleblower column and blog, reporting about regular people getting ripped off and fighting the system, holding people and institutions accountable. He gets his stories from readers who call and write in to the newsroom, as well as from public records. Since starting Whistleblower in 2008, Shiffer has brought to light problems with professional guardians and conservators, prodded the state to help homeowners suffering from highway construction and helped numerous individuals solve their longstanding disputes. In 2007, Shiffer helped lead the team of reporters covering the I-35W Bridge collapse in Minneapolis -- including “13 Seconds in August”, a collection of survivors’ stories that won national and regional awards.

A native of Scarsdale, N.Y., Shiffer previously worked at The News & Observer of Raleigh, N.C. He holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Wesleyan University in Connecticut.
