  • Project: Locked in limbo: Inside the Minnesota Sex Offender Program
Minnesota has civilly committed 554 men and one woman to the Minnesota Sex Offender Program (MSOP), designed to treat paroled sex offenders until they are no longer dangerous. The 2003 killing of Dru Sjodin triggered a surge of commitments. But the system's spiraling cost and lack of measurable success are causing growing unease.

  • Audio: Liver donor's decision came from the heart
Today Peggy Pond will donate 60 percent of her liver to friend and colleague, Peter Dimock. When Dimock discovered he had liver cancer he was told his best chance at survuval was to receive a transplant. Nationwide there are 17,000 people on a waiting list. The sickest are first on the list for donations. Many donors are family members. But Dimock didn’t have to look any further for his new liver than Peters Hall at the University of Minnesota, where he is a teaching specialist in the School of Social Work. Pond, his coworker, made the decision in April to donate to him. Because livers can regenerate, if all goes well in about three months both will have nearly full-sized, healthy livers. Listen to them talk about this experience.

  • State Fair horse show is in family's blood
It's 4 a.m. at Sunup Ranch. The sound of a hammer striking a horseshoe on an anvil rings from the barn. It could be the third or fourth time the shoe has been nailed to the hoof, analyzed and determined not to be perfect, so it is reset. In three hours, the horses will be loaded for the trip to the State Fair. It will be the 50th year this end-of-summer rhythm will cycle through my family's life.
