Otto Machado: Waiting for a second kidney transplant

Otto Machado is waiting for his second kidney transplant and must undergo dialysis treatments several times a week at home. He suffers from a genetic disorder that caused his kidneys to fail, a condition that affects three of his brothers who have also received transplants. In 2007, Machado’s youngest child, daughter Dani, was diagnosed with renal failure.

In May, ten same-sex couples from Minnesota, including Roger Schiltz and his partner, Keith Monjak, traveled to Davenport, Iowa to exchange vows, just days after the state's supreme court ruled it legal. Same-sex marriage is not recognized in Minnesota. Roger has terminal prostate cancer and is being cared for by Keith at the couple's New Brighton home.
