Sophomore guard Porter Morrell came through for Northwestern (St. Paul) again, scoring 20 points in an 84-75 victory over Elmhurst on Saturday night in De Pere, Wis., that sent the Eagles to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division III men's basketball tournament.

The Eagles (20-9), who trailed by three at halftime, outscored Elmhurst 52-40 in the second half to earn their 18th consecutive victory.

Victory No. 17 of the streak came in dramatic fashion: Morrell hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to shock St. Thomas 71-70 on Friday night, the first NCAA tournament victory in Northwestern program history.

Michael Carney added 14 points for the Eagles, who will play either East Texas Baptist or Claremont-Mudd-Scripps next weekend.

Kyle Wuest scored 21 to lead the Bluejays (20-8), who beat host St. Norbert in triple overtime on Friday night.

St. Olaf 68, Defiance College 63: Justin Pahl had 20 points and Ben Figini 18, including a clinching free throw in the closing seconds, as the No. 24-ranked Oles (23-5) rallied to beat the Yellow Jackets (22-7) in a second-round game in Whitewater, Wis.

Sterling Nielsen added 14 points and Riley Aeikens eight. Aeikens' layup in with 1:47 left gave the Oles a 64-63 lead after they trailed by 10 in the first half and by seven at the break.

Defiance stunned defending national champion Wisconsin-Whitewater on its home floor Friday night. Against The Oles, Bernard Edwards led Defiance with 18 points and 10 rebounds but shot 5-for-20 from the floor. Women

St. Thomas 60, Luther 57: Jenna Dockter had 15 points and nine rebounds and the Tommies improved to 29-0 after limiting the Norse (23-6) to 31 percent shooting in a second-round women's game at St. Thomas' Schoenecker Arena.

Luther trailed 50-32 with 13:40 to go but used a 25-10 game-closing run to whittle the lead. St. Thomas blocked a three-point try at the buzzer.

St. Thomas advanced to face Hope next weekend, its third Sweet 16 trip in four seasons.

Division II

The tournament brackets will be announced Sunday night for Division II men and women. The NSIC's automatic qualifers are Augustana for the men and Northern State for the women.
