Apple Valley star Tyus Jones earns spot on 16U national team

Colorado Springs, Colo - For three days, Apple Valley basketball star Tyus Jones fought to prove himself against 26 of the best 15- and 16-year-old basketball players in the country in a tryout for the Men's National Developmental Team at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
On Sunday, Jones, a 15-year-old whom the Gophers have offered a scholarship, was rewarded for his efforts with a spot on the 12-man squad, which will compete for a gold medal at the FIBA AMERICAS U16 Championship for Men in Cancun, Mexico, June 21-June 25.
I'll write more about the tryout Monday.
This is Amelia Rayno's fifth season on the Gophers men's basketball beat. She learned college basketball in North Carolina (Go Tar Heels!), where fanhood is not an option. In 2010, she joined the Star Tribune after graduating from Boston's Emerson College, which sadly had no exciting D-I college hoops to latch onto. Amelia has also worked on the sports desk at the Boston Globe and interned at the Detroit News.
