Get thee to Shakopee

All sales lead to Shakopee this week, or at least five of them do. On sale are candles, gourmet foods, coffee, jewelry and gift wrap, boxes and bows. The North Aire Market sale (1157 Valley Park Dr., Suite 130, 952-496-2887, www.gourmet will have Maggie and Mary's gourmet soups, cheese balls, dip and smoothie mixes and gift packs discounted 40 to 50 percent, with lots of free samples. Cash and checks only. Open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Gage & Gage gift wrapping, boxes and bows (660 Industrial Circle, 952-233-2081, are discounted 40 to 90 percent. Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekends.

Dianne's candles (VFW, 1201 3rd Av. E., 952-746-5530) is a local high-end candlemaker. Closeout and overrun candles in glass containers, all highly fragranced and made from food-grade wax or soy, will be about $5, regularly about $30. Other items include pillars, potpourri, diffusers for $7 and gourmet mini-cheescakes (seconds or overruns) for $5 (12-pack) to $15 (35). Dianne's will be open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Sunday.

New to the mix this year is Cameron's Coffee (5700 12th Av. E., 952-374-5000). Locally made coffee, syrups and mixes will be discounted 20 to 50 percent, including organic, fair trade and shade-grown varieties. Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

Semiannual appliance warehouse sale

You could wait for the "dollars for dishwashers" rebate program next year, but I'll wager that sale prices will dry up due to the rebate. For a better deal now, try Warners' Stellian appliances extreme warehouse sale (550 Atwater Circle, St. Paul, 651-222-0011, It's from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Many appliances, including overstocks and scratch-and-dents, are offered below cost. Others in boxes are special purchases for the event. Sample savings include Bosch dishwashers starting at $399. Brands include Miele, Viking, Wolf, Sub-Zero and Jenn Air as well as middle-of-the-road mainstays. All sales are final, but manufacturers' warranties still apply. A few people start lining up at 7 a.m., so go early for best selection. Haul your own or pay a $75 delivery fee. Delivery includes installation for some appliances, but extra charges apply for dishwashers, wall ovens or refrigerators with water hookups.

Sample sales at the home show

More than 200 exhibitors will take part in the Midwest Home Show at the Minneapolis Convention Center this weekend, but bargain hunters will want to head to two events. The high-end flea market will include Twin Cities designers selling discounted showroom samples. Examples include a Pottery Barn lamp for $10, regularly $150, a handmade king-sized comforter for $400, regularly $6,000, and a set of three matching pillows for $150, regularly $675. GunkelmanFlesher will have an end table for $250, regularly $1,950, as well as office chairs, dining tables and a few sofas. The National Kitchen & Bath Association garage sale will include appliances, granite slabs, faucets and sinks. Tickets are $8 at the door or $6 at Cub Foods.
