Officials hope Internet publicity of delinquent Illinois taxpayers will force them to pay up

Last update: November 4, 2009 - 10:58 AM

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - Illinois taxpayers and businesses owing more than $1,000 in delinquent taxes are going worldwide.

The Department of Revenue has posted its annual list of tax scofflaws on the Internet.

There are more than 100 entries owing a total of $6.3 million.

State law allows the department to post the names of taxpayers owing $1,000 or more for six months if they've been notified by mail.

This year, the agency sent two rounds of notices to nearly 36,000 taxpayers and generated $15 million in payment.

The agency has also worked with state regulators to suspend the professional licenses of those owing taxes and have developed a computerized program that allows for phone-calling campaigns to specific debtors.
