Hastings lawyer succeeds Judge Mary Pawlenty

Last update: April 24, 2007 - 8:43 PM

Hastings attorney Shawn Moynihan was appointed Tuesday by Gov. Tim Pawlenty to the Dakota County district judgeship that First Lady Mary Pawlenty resigned from in February.

Moynihan, 52, is a partner in the law firm of Fluegel and Moynihan, the Hastings city attorney and a Rosemount city prosecutor. In a news release, Gov. Pawlenty praised his "varied background in both criminal and civil law," his 25 years of experience trying hundreds of cases in Dakota County and "his even temperament and respectful manner."

Mary Pawlenty, named a judge by former Gov. Arne Carlson in 1994 and elected twice afterward, stepped down Feb. 12 to become general counsel for the National Arbitration Forum of St. Louis Park. She quit that job barely a month later, saying it was "not a good fit."
